Jamaica being urged to stop forced removal of Haitians; regional approach to crisis recommended

Mickel Jackson, Executive Director of Jamaicans for Justice, and Malene Alleyne, founder of Freedom Imaginaries

The Jamaican Government is being urged to take an individual approach to Haitians arriving in Jamaica rather than sending them all back to their homeland without access to an attorney.

This plea comes after yet another group of Haitians were sent back last week, shortly after arriving in Jamaica.

Mickel Jackson, Executive Director of Jamaicans for Justice, contends that an assessment should be done of each individual coming from Haiti prior to repatriation.

Ms Jackson, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines,  expressed grave concern that Haitians seeking refuge are continually turned away shortly after arriving in Jamaica.

The human rights organization Freedom Imaginaries launched a campaign on Monday, calling for regional and international organizations to show solidarity with Haitian migrants and asylum seekers.

Malene Alleyne, attorney and founder of Freedom Imaginaries, wants the the Jamaican Government to suspend forced return of Haitians to their homeland.

She also wants to see a regional approach being adopted to finance the refugee crisis involving Haitian nationals.

Miss Alleyne, also speaking on Beyond the Headlines, said CARICOM states should devise a plan of action to provide equal treatment to Haitians who are seeking to migrate due to the crisis in their country.
