The Jamaican Government is calling for increased support from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for small island developing states faced with the rapidly changing telecommunications environment and increasing vulnerability to external shocks.
Presenting Jamaica’s Policy Statement to the ITU Conference currently underway in Korea, Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell, emphasised the need for new ITU programmes designed to address the needs of developing countries such as Jamaica.
Pauwell, who is President of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union, is also encouraging the ITU to continue to support the work of regional institutions which do significant work in support of small island developing states.
He said better use of ICT’s can contribute to the resilience of the economies of these developing states which are vulnerable to global economic, environmental and climatic shocks.
Reflecting on the benefits that Jamaica has derived from its fifty years of membership in the ITU, Mr Paulwell stated that in recent years, cooperation with the union has contributed significantly to national development.
