Jamaican gov't providing humanitarian assistance to Venezuela

The Government of Jamaica is providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Venezuela, following the two devastating earthquakes last month.

 

Foreign Minister Kamina Johnson Smith made the announcement on Tuesday, adding that it formed part of Jamaica's continued expression of solidarity with the country.

 

The assistance comprises a mix of pharmaceutical supplies and food items to support relief efforts in affected communities.

 

Minister Johnson Smith said the contribution from Jamaica is included as part of the CARICOM effort, which is being coordinated by the Government of Guyana. 

 

"Although Jamaica is still in its recovery and reconstruction stage, we have not forgotten the hand of friendship extended to us by Venezuela in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. That support reached us at a difficult hour and we are moved by the same spirit of friendship and regional solidarity as Venezuela now confronts this terrible tragedy. Jamaica stands with the people of Venezuela as families grieve, the injured received care, and affected communities begin the difficult work of recovery and rebuilding," said Minister Johnson Smith.

 

In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Melissa, Venezuela provided 20 tonnes of medical, food and infrastructure supplies to Jamaica.

 

The June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela have resulted in significant loss of life, injuries, displacement and damage to communities, with the death toll now more than 3,500.

 

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government on Wednesday called for all countries to the release its frozen assets so they can be used to raise funds for the country's recovery.
