Jamaican working as police officer in US arrested for overstaying visa

A Jamaican man who was working as a police officer in Maine but overstayed his United States visa is in custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE).

Jon Luke Evans lawfully entered the US on September 24, 2023 and was scheduled to leave on October 1 that same year.

He was arrested on Friday by officials from ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston in partnership with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,  Firearms and Explosives, after he attempted to purchase a firearm illegally.

Mr. Evans was a reserve police officer with the Old Orchard Beach Police Department at the time of his arrest.

He reported ICE officials that he tried to buy a firearm for his employment as a police officer.

Old Orchard Beach Police Chief Elise Shard said the Department of Homeland Security verify that Mr. Evans was authorised to work in the US after undergoing the same background checks, physical tests and medical evaluations as full-time officers.

But she said, while reserve officers are issued a department firearm, they must return it at the end of each shift and are not allowed to bring it home or purchase or carry any other firearm for their duties.

The Old Orchard Beach Police Department said it was never officially notified of the incident by ICE and intends to conduct an investigation.
