JFJ opposed to Electoral Commission assuming the powers of Political Ombudsman

Mickel Jackson, Executive Director, Jamaicans for Justice

Executive Director of  Jamaicans For Justice, Mickel Jackson is not in agreement with the government's decision to place the role of the political ombudsman under the remit of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica.

During Tuesday's sitting of the House of Representatives, Justice Minister Delroy Chuck tabled a bill to amend the Political Ombudsman (Interim) Act which would see the power of the Ombudsman being given to the Commission.

Ms. Jackson, responding on Radio Jamaica’s Beyond the Headlines, noted that the move disregards recommendations previously put forward to strengthen the role of the Political Ombudsman.

She said, given Jamaica's political climate, the move increases the potential for decisions to be taken by the ECJ which could heighten rather than quell political tension.
