JHTA making preparations to alleviate drought conditions in Negril

 

In light of concerns relating to decreased rainfall, President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA), Christopher Jarrett, says preparations are being made to ensure adequate supply amid possible water restrictions for Negril.

 

The National Water Commission last Wednesday warned residents to brace for possible water restrictions as the country is experiencing drought conditions.

 

"[Water] continues to be a challenge, but of course you would have heard that the government had already agreed on a timeframe with a programme that is a multi-million dollar project that will be providing water. In the meantime, there are talks continuing with the government for relief in the form of duty-free concessions on water tanks and that kind of discussion," said Mr. Jarrett. 

 

The JHTA president was speaking Monday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106 FM.

 

Last week, the Meteorological Service of Jamaica said drought conditions are expected during the usual wet period between May and November. 

 

Water Minister Matthew Samuda said the government has allocated $350 million for drought mitigation efforts across the island.
