JHTA: No fallout seen from protest by hotel workers

JHTA President Robin Russell

President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association [JHTA] Robin Russell has revealed that it does not appear that the recent industrial action by hotel workers in western Jamaica has had a negative impact on the tourism sector.

Mr Russell is hoping that there will be no fall-out as the sector picks up from a slow period over the last two months.

In an interview with Radio Jamaica News, the JHTA president stressed that the tourism sector has been going through a rough patch.

Mr Russell has urged hotel operators and managers to communicate with staff to determine their level of satisfaction with working conditions.

He cited "a communication problem," as one of the biggest factors at the properties at which protests have taken place so far.

"When you have an issue that is resolved within 24 hours, it means that somebody wasn't talking to somebody before, because if you're able to come up with a solution that quickly, it means that the solution was there."

e said the JHTA's working committee, which has been tasked to take a broad look at the challenges facing the tourism sector, should by Monday, have available for distribution, best practices adopted from hotels which have been managing their operations effectively.
