The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has distanced itself from comments made by Government Minister and Member of Parliament Everald Warmington about withholding state funds from a PNP councillor following Monday's Local Government Election.
Addressing supporters following the election, the South Western St. Catherine Member of Parliament expressed disappointment with the results in St. Catherine after PNP's candidate Dr. Kurt Waul defeated the JLP's Lloyd Grant in the Old Harbour South Division.
In a 47-second video circulating on social media, Mr. Warmington was seen telling supporters that he's in charge of the Works Ministry and that no PNP councillor will be spending his money.
But in a media release Wednesday evening, the JLP said it condemns the statements and distances itself from the suggestion of political victimization within constituencies.
The JLP said the party follows the principles of equal rights and justice, and any suggestion that the democratically elected councillor will be victimized must be rebuffed.
It said Mr. Warmington's comments are reprehensible and do not represent the views of the Jamaica Labour Party or its leadership.
