Jamaica Labour Party Councillor for the Brown's Town Division in St. Ann, Kim Brown Lawrence has disclosed that she will not be seeking re-election in next Local Government election.

The election, last held in February 2024, is due in 2028.

In a Facebook post, Mrs. Brown Lawrence said she made her decision known in a letter sent to the JLP hierarchy on October 22.

Councillor Lawrence said she informed the party that it will have a year to find a suitable candidate.

She has urged those interested in representing the division to apply.

Mrs. Brown Lawrence, who is before the court in relation to a fraud matter involving the Caribbean Maritime University, said she contemplated resigning, but decided to remain until her term ends, citing the need to continue earning a monthly allowance.

She also indicated that she will not be crossing the floor, but leaving politics altogether.

The JLP councillor and four co-accused have been on trial arising from allegations that more than $25 million in public funds were withdrawn from the CMU through fake jobs, sham contracts and bogus invoices from 2016 to 2019.
