There is disquiet among supporters of the Jamaica Labour Party in Portmore, St. Catherine, following the party's decision to install radio broadcaster Markland Edwards as the party's standard bearer in the mayoral race in the upcoming local government election.

Mr. Edwards is to replace Delroy Dobney who was confirmed by the party in October last year to challenge incumbent Leon Thomas for the post of Mayor.

Mr. Dobney confirmed to Radio Jamaica News on Thursday afternoon that he was called to a meeting Wednesday and informed of the change.

Mr. Edwards confirmed that he has been tapped to run against Mayor Thomas.

But this decision has not gone down well with JLP supporters who protested in front of the St. Catherine Southern constituency office on Thursday.

"It is unfair fi see a man affi a run up and down and up there do all weh him have fi do, and all of sudden dem want fi tek him out and put somebody who don't know di people, who have never walk wid di people dem, and put dem in. This is unfair.... We don't want Markland. We need Mr. Dobney," one woman complained.

They want Prime Minister Andrew Holness to intervene in the matter, cautioning that the JLP will suffer if the issue is not addressed.

"If Markland is the man, no vote, nobody will be working come election," the JLP supporter warned.
