Johnson Smith touts success of Diaspora conferences

Minister of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade Kamina Johnson Smith is touting the successes achieved by the biennial staging of the Jamaica Diaspora Conference over the last two decades.

Mrs Johnson Smith says the conferences have been marked by achievements in engaging Jamaicans overseas in the development of the country.

According to her, Jamaica's approach to engaging with its diaspora over the years has become a model for other developing countries, while encouraging stakeholders, both locally and internationally, to get involved.

She has noted that, over the years, the conferences have facilitated a whole-of-society approach to developing the National Diaspora Policy and other key initiatives.

One of these innovations, she highlighted is the Jamaica Diaspora Engagement Model platform, which will support Jamaicans overseas interested in investing in the country.

Mrs Johnson Smith insists that the diaspora conference is not a talk shop, adding that Jamaica has been able to build its partnership with its diaspora into its foreign policy framework, development plan, as well as into its medium-term socio-economic framework.

The 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference will be held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre from June 16 to 19.
