JPPC, NWU redundancy row referred to IDT

The row over the redundancy exercise at the Jamaica Private Power Company (JPPC) has now been referred to the Industrial Disputes Tribunal(IDT).

The Ministry of Labour took action after the National Workers Union (NWU) and the company's management failed to reach a settlement.

Granville Valentine, NWU vice president, wants the IDT to conduct a speedy hearing into the matter.

“We are willing to corporate in full with the Ministry of Labour and to ensure that there is harmony during the period of the IDT hearing,” said Mr. Valentine.

More than a dozen positions at the JPPC were made redundant late last month as part of a reorganisation of  the power company. The NWU contended that the cuts were not justified.
