Duane Smith, Chairman of the KSAMC's Commercial Services Committee
The Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) is to intensify its clampdown on unregulated food vending.
Duane Smith, Chairman of the Corporation's Commercial Services Committee, said the problem is widespread and the KSAMC is looking at several public health and public order issues which have been brought to its attention.
The KSAMC said hundreds of food vendors are selling in major towns and there are no records or systems to monitor their operations.
He said the KSAMC is also seeking to regulate persons selling food on the streets by ensuring they are registered with the Public Health Department, the KSAMC, and have a food handler's permit.
Mr. Smith said vendors of food items such as hot dogs, jerked meats, fish and soup will come under greater scrutiny.
He explained that some of them do not follow best practices and this could cause health concerns, especially in the spreading of communicable diseases.
The KSAMC is to meet with the vendors within three weeks as it prepares to regulate them.
The Corporation will be liaising with the Ministry of Health.
Mr. Smith noted that most of the vendors have been receptive to the proposals and are willing to become regulated.
