Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby
Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby has pledged to tackle the increase in the mosquito population since the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
The mayor said he will be pressing for an inter-agency approach to address the problem.
He said there are several areas of concern for the public health officials and the municipal corporation.
These include gullies, some of which have breakaways at the base that store water and are possible mosquito breeing sites.
In addition, the mayor said the sewage plant in Harbour View needs attention as it could also be a breeding site.
He said a discussion will be had with the National Works Agency as the municipal corporation embarks on the clean up effort.
Mayor Swaby also noted that there has been an increase in fogging activity to rid the city of mosquitoes.
The activity, he said, starts about 5 a.m. each morning and resumes in the evenings.
