One man is in custody while another is being sought following the seizure of a stolen motor car in Mandeville, Manchester.

The men reportedly stole a black Honda Stepwagon from a car wash in Clarendon.

The vehicle was intercepted along Caledonia Road, Mandeville.

The police say the occupants of the vehicle opened fire at them, which led to a shootout.

Inspector Simon McCormack, sub-officer in charge of the Mandeville Police Station, says one man was held while another escaped.

He says the police have been clamping down on illegal activities in the parish.

"We have been experiencing a downward trend in criminal activities and Manchester is no safe haven for criminals. It's also to note that the chances of eluding the police [are] quite minimal. The police are actively engaged in operational activities in space and we are taking a zero-tolerance approach to these type of activities. Once you conduct yourself in a certain way, the chances of being held [are] quite great," he warned.
