Man arrested for destroying PNP campaign posters in Kingston Central

Radio Jamaica News has been informed that a man who was seen on video destroying political posters and paraphernalia of People's National Party candidate Steve McGregor in the Kingston Central constituency on Thursday has been arrested.

He was taken into custody Thursday afternoon by the Kingston Central Police.

This was confirmed by Superintendent Beresford Williams, head of the Kingston Central Police. He said the incident is being investigated by his team.

The suspect was picked up shortly after Mr. McGregor filed a formal complaint that his posters and paraphernalia were being destroyed along Rosemary Lane during a tour by Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness.

Videos captured by residents and PNP supporters showed a man destroying the material.

Tension has been high in the constituency since Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Member of Parliament Donovan Williams claimed that he and members of his campaign team came on the gunfire on Tuesday in the constituency while erecting signs at the corner of Lower South Camp Road and Tower Street.

This claim has been rubbished by the People's National Party, which has called for the police to release full details of its findings in the incident.

Mr. McGregor claimed that the police have CCTV footage of the incident.

The latest shooting in the constituency has increased the tension between the two major political parties.

The police said another incident that took place in the vicinity of a JLP rally last month was not politically motivated.
