Former central banker Mark Carney will become Canada's next Prime Minister after the governing Liberal Party elected him its leader on Sunday, even as the country focuses on U.S. President Donald Trump's trade war and annexation threat, and a federal election looms.

Mr Carney, 59, will replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January but remains Prime Minister until his successor takes office in the coming days.

Mr Carney won in a landslide, winning 85.9% of the vote.

He said Canada will not allow US President Donald Trump to succeed in weakening the country and attacking Canadian families.

He warned that Canada will keep retaliatory tariffs in place until the Americans show Canada  respect.
