US President Joe Biden has unveiled executive action that would bar people who cross the US-Mexico border illegally from requesting asylum, during periods when there is a high volume of illegal crossings.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said his country is seeking an agreement for the US to deport asylum-seekers and migrants to their countries of origin instead of Mexico.
The announcement comes after US President Joe Biden unveiled executive action that would bar people who cross the US-Mexico border illegally from requesting asylum, during periods when there is a high volume of illegal crossings.
Unless they meet certain exemptions, the asylum-seekers would be turned away to Mexico or returned to their home countries.
'Draconian policy'
Immigrant rights advocates have slammed Mr. Biden's new policy, describing it as the most draconian move since he entered the White House.
A senior policy analyst at the National Immigrant Justice Center, said Mr. Biden's recent executive order violates both US and international law because it will send people with viable asylum claims back to harm.
President Biden's executive order, which came into effect on Wednesday, allows his administration to stop processing asylum claims if the number of irregular crossings at the US-Mexico border surpasses 2,500 daily, for a week.
The order allows for certain exemptions, including for unaccompanied minors and people determined to be victims of human trafficking.
