More than 100 BVI prisoners escape during Hurricane Irma

It has been revealed that more than 100 prisoners escaped when Hurricane Irma hit the British Virgin Islands.

This was confirmed by Britain's Foreign Office Minister Sir Alan Duncan.

Addressing the House of Commons, Sir Alan said there were 997 troops in the region and 47 police officers had been sent to the British Virgin Islands.

Sir Alan said five people are now known to have died in the British Virgin Islands and four in Anguilla.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron is visiting the affected French islands.

As he arrived in Guadeloupe on Tuesday, President Macron said the government had responded with one of the biggest airlifts since World War II.

He told reporters that last week's hurricane had been almost unprecedented and the effort had been hampered by a second hurricane, Jose, in the area days later.

He promised a rebirth of the islands.
