Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie
Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie has confirmed that there are more than 900 shelters opened across the island, several of which have been occupied since Sunday.
Mr. McKenzie, who gave an update on the shelters during a news conference on Sunday, said the shelters are equipped to respond to the needs of persons by Hurricane Matthew.
Clarendon
In Portland Cottage, Clarendon, residents who slept in the shelter at the primary school were forced to make wooden benches their beds for the night.
Inez Williams, Shelter Manager for Portland Cottage, told RJR News that the shelter had not been provided with mattresses.
Up to 9:00 p.m. Sunday, 17 persons including children and the elderly were in the shelter.
KSAC
The Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) has also announced that 31 of its Emergency Shelters are open.
The KSAC says all eleven priority shelters are also operational and have been equipped with basic supplies, although no food will be provided immediately.
In a statement Sunday night, the KSAC said critical drains are being monitored and specialised technical teams are in place to supervise and coordinate activities.
Equipment have also been pre-positioned at strategic points for use should the need arise.
Additionally, the authority says, so far, 23 persons have been relocated to the Marie Atkins Shelter at 65 Hanover Street in Kingston, as well as other specially designated shelters for homeless persons.
It urged persons to evacuate flood-prone areas or areas that pose immediate danger.
