Dead crocodiles found in NWC sewage ponds in Portmore

Environmentalists are expressing shock after several dead crocodiles were discovered in National Water Commission (NWC) sewage ponds in Portmore, St. Catherine on Tuesday.

In total, seven crocodiles including a female with several eggs were found dead.

The crocodiles have been longtime residents of the sewage ponds which act as refuge from the surrounding urban development taking over their natural wetlands.

There are several sewage ponds in the area where the crocodiles have lived, bred and moved freely between the ponds and surrounding wetlands. But residents say several ponds were neglected and left to dry.

The plastic liners surrounding each pond prevented the crocodiles from escaping the dried up ponds resulting in them baking and starving in the hot sun.

Most of the dead crocodiles were found near the edge of the pond where they were sliding track marks, an indication they were trying to climb out.
