Radio Jamaica News has been informed that the group of Haitian asylum seekers who were rounded up on Wednesday night for a mass repatriation exercise have been sent back to Haiti.
The group, comprising four women and 13 men, left sometime after 11 p.m. on a Jamaica Defence Force vessel, accompanied by the Portland Marine Police and the JDF Coast Guard.
Malene Alleyne, attorney and founder of human rights lobby group, Freedom Imaginaries, said she had been communicating with the group, but has since lost contact.
"My contact on the ground, one of the Haitians on the wharf, the last point of contact was 8:57 and he has lost all communication now. We were communicating right until that point," she explained.
Radio Jamaica News had obtained footage of the Haitians at the Bound Brook wharf in Portland on Wednesday night being boarded onto a Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard vessel.
