NWC disconnects 25 service locations for breaches in St. Catherine

Coleen Williams Champagnie, Revenue Recovery Manager for the NWC's St. Catherine and Clarendon Region

A joint operation by the Revenue Recovery and Customer Service teams of the National Water Commission resulted in 25 disconnections for delinquency and breaches along the Dunbeholden main road in St. Catherine on Thursday.

The NWC says 19 of those entities were found to be illegally connected to its network.

The agency says the operation focused on the commercial corridor where several businesses were found to be accessing water supply without legitimate accounts or having reconnected themselves after disconnection for non-payment.

Among the entities disconnected were a shipping/courier company, hardware and tyre shop, garage, mini container store, and restaurant & bar.

Revenue Recovery Manager for the St. Catherine and Clarendon Region, Coleen Williams-Champagnie says the agency will be intentional about reducing non-revenue water and improving service delivery to its paying customers.

"We continue to see too many commercial entities operating with illegal connections," she noted.

She characterised this as "unfair to our paying customers and impacts our ability to provide reliable service."

"We're also encouraging these entities to visit our offices to regularize their connections and make suitable payment arrangements to avoid further enforcement action," she said.

The agency is reminding the public that illegal connection constitutes theft of water, is a criminal offence under the NWC Act, and deprives paying customers of service while reducing revenues needed for system improvements.
