MoU signed for St. Ann highway expansions

Works Minister Robert Morgan and Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness

The Government and China Harbour Engineering Company [CHECH] have signed a multi-million dollar Memorandum of Understanding to conduct feasibility studies for two highway expansions in St Ann.

The proposed developments will involve the extension of Edward Seaga Highway, which currently terminates in Mammee Bay, and expansion of the North Coast Highway.

The need for expansion of the North Coast Highway was highlighted on the weekend when motorists were caught in a gridlock for several hours.

Robert Morgan, Minister with responsibility for Works, noted at the signing ceremony on Monday that St Ann has experienced growth far beyond what was projected a decade ago.

The Minister confirmed that both highways will be operated as tolled roads.

Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness, also speaking at the signing ceremony, reiterated that rapid growth over the last 10 years has outpaced the capacity of the North Coast Highway, noting that “development never stands still.”
