Several Members of Parliament have appealed for more government funds to enable them to offer assistance to tertiary students.
The appeal was made during Tuesday's meeting of the Constituency Development Fund Committee.
Opposition Member Denise Daley said last year's allocation of $3 million for tertiary assistance was helpful and the anticipation is for a similar if not greater amount, because "the demand is even greater this year, with respect to students who are asking."
She said school fees have risen significantly this year, making the requests for assistance even more pessing.
Homer Davis, Chairman of the Constituency Development Fund and MP from the Majority side of the House, said his office has also been getting numerous requests ahead of the start of the new school term.
Furthermore, he said, "the students are doing much better, and so... more and more of them (are) coming to you for some tuition assistance, and that is what I really use that additional funds for..."
The Secretariat has pledged to consider the requests.
