Munro College faces setback after Huricane Melissa

Dr. Mark Smith, Principal of Munro College

Students and teachers at Munro College in St. Elizabeth are facing another setback after Hurricane Melissa severely damaged the campus two weeks ago.

Principal Dr. Mark Smith spoke with Radio Jamaica News on Friday, describing the destruction as significant. But he admitted that it "pales in comparison" to the devastation the school suffered during Hurricane Beryl last year.

He said the school has again suffered extensive structural damage, leaving major parts of the campus in urgent need of repair.

"We've lost several roofs, including our PC building and our junior IT lab and part of our Coke Building, and I can go on... Several other buildings have been adversely affected - eight in total - but it pales in comparison to the devastation we faced under Beryl," he asserted.

Dr. Smith said following assessments, the estimated cost of repairs and necessary placements is at least $90 million.

He noted that although work has already begun, they will need help replacing their water tanks and essential electrical equipment.

"Patching up the campus as best as we can with the limited resources that we presently possess, and we're hoping to have our grade 13s, 12 and grade 11s in - our sixth formers and our fifth formers in Monday. The idea is that we focus on these exam students, and shortly after, the following week, we're expecting to bring in our fourth formers."

He said, if all works efficiently, the plan is to gradually bring in the other year groups.
