Murders down by 42 per cent this year

Ten murders were committed in Jamaica last week, bringing the homicide toll to 415 as at August 9.
 
This represents a 42 per cent decline in murders year-on-year, with the country having had 712 murders during the same period last year.
 
The information was outlined in the latest serious crime statistics, published by the Jamaica Constabulary Force on Sunday.
 
The St Andrew South Police Division continues to lead all 19 police jurisdictions in homicides, with 50 murders recorded.
 
In other statistics, shootings, wounding, and rapes have also declined, but robbery has increased by 11 per cent and break-ins by 24 per cent.
 
Overall, reported crimes are down 17 per cent.
