Negril residents protest lack of water, delay in West End road repairs

By Nakinskie Robinson

A section of the West End main road in Negril, Westmoreland was blocked on Wednesday by residents protesting the lack of potable water.

The residents also aired their frustrations about the length of time it is taking for the government to rehabilitate the main road which was damaged during adverse weather conditions last month.

Fallen trees, old refrigerators and other debris were used to prevent vehicular movement.

Former Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar Bertel Moore, who was also present, was seen hoisting a placard that read "We need water now".

The disgruntled residents called the situation a "disgrace", adding that it cannot be allowed to continue.

Police officers on the scene attempted to de-escalate tensions but were met with hostility from the residents who maintained their protest.

The action hindered movement for scores of tourists.

The road has since been cleared.
