Leonard Francis, CEO, National Environment and Planning Agency
The National Environment and Planning Agency [NEPA] is pledging to pour more resources into monitoring and enforcement.
The agency has come in for severe criticism in recent times over its lack of oversight after a number of developments were cited for breaches of the permits.
The newly appointed CEO, Leonard Francis, speaking Monday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said NEPA is determined to balance economic development with protection of the environment within a sustainable framework.
He said the agency is committed to ensuring that enforcement measures are improved, and to assist in that process, citizens associations will be given incentives to get involved in monitoring and ensuring enforcement.

Mr Francis also pledged that NEPA will take its role of protecting waterways more seriously.
This comes against the backdrop of several cases of pollutants entering waterways, resulting in the death of the fish stock.
Mr Francis stressed that the agency is contemplating public education and training of community persons to supplement its activities to bolster the case against violators.
