Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett disclosed on Tuesday that the process to repeal and replace the 70 year-old Tourist Board Act is complete.

He told the House of Representatives on Tuesday that the new Act contains modernized provisions, in keeping with current realities, and strengthens the enforcement provisions that ensure Jamaica maintains its reputation for quality tourism experiences.

He said the bill, scheduled to be brought to the Lower House next week, and will "increase the types of involvement, the range of involvement, and (will)... respond to the innovations of our time."

He stressed that "so many changes have taken place over the last seventy years; so many new experiences have emerged; so many new systems have emerged; so many practices too and so many business models, and we need to step out now and provide the legislative and regulatory arrangements to be able to facilitate these developments..."

The new Tourist Board Act will also repeal the River Rafting Act and will transfer regulatory and operational functions of the River Rafting Authority to the Jamaica Tourist Board.
