New US Ambassador to Haiti vows to deal with security situation as a priority

The new United States Ambassador to Haiti, Henry Wooster, says his priority is to address the security situation where criminal gangs have been seeking to overthrow the government.

In a video message, Mr. Wooster, who previously served in Haiti from 1998 to 2000, said he is honoured to return to the country and lead the US embassy at such a crucial time.

Earlier this month the United Nations said between October 2024 and June this year, Haiti had been caught in a vicious and unending cycle with gang violence expanding westward into the Artibonite and Centre Departments.

More than 1.3 million Haitians have been displaced, representing the largest displacement due to political upheaval in Haitian history.

The UN says food insecurity among displaced Haitians is rampant, with Haiti being one of five countries worldwide which is experiencing famine like conditions.
