The Transport Authority has released approved wrecker fees which are to take effect on January 2.

The authority says the new fees are aimed at curtailing and managing the wrecking service operation across the island.

Ralston Smith, Managing Director of the Transport Authority, said the new rates will also bring order to the conduct of wrecker operators and manage the charges for service rendered.

Within five kilometres of a pound the fee for a motorcar will be $12,000 while it will be $22,500 for a motor truck, which includes Hiace and Coaster buses.

Any additional kilometre will attract a charge of $600 for a car and $800 for a bus.

A no key charge of $4,500 will apply to cars while $6,000 will be applicable for buses.

The Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services has welcomed the new wrecker fees announced by the Transport Authority.

Operators of public passenger vehicles have complained bitterly over what they have consistently described as excessive the fees charged by wrecking services.

TODSS President Egeton Newman expressed relief that the contentious issue of wrecker fees has finally been resolved.

"For the over a decade and a half we have been suffering at the hands of wrecking companies who have been charging exorbitant fees to wreck PPV vehicle, and the level of corruption that was engaged in the record system, we are happy that some move have (sic) been made by government to address the problem.

"The fees could be considered too high. But it's better you pay such a fee than you pay for three or four times the amount and a portion of it goes into the hands of people who should not be engaged in that sort of behaviour," he noted.

Mr. Newman has encouraged PPV operators to abide by the law to avoid having to pay these fees.
