Nick Perry makes case to US Foreign Relations Committee to be confirmed as US Ambassador to Jamaica

New York State Assemblyman Nick Perry on Tuesday made his case before the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Capitol Hill to be confirmed as United States Ambassador to Jamaica.

If  confirmed, he would be the first Jamaican-born person to serve as U.S. ambassador to the country

A report in New York's Daily News says Mr. Perry's backing by the committee is expected and his nomination will go to the full Senate for approval.

Mr. Perry, who is 71, told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that, along with bolstering the historically close ties between Jamaica and the U.S., he would expand security ties, particularly in countering illegal drug trafficking.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Mr. Perry an ideal candidate to be the next envoy to Jamaica.
