No survivors found after collision between passenger plane and US Army helicopter

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that there were no survivors in the midair collision between a military helicopter and a passenger plane over the Potomac River in Washington D.C. on Wednesday night.

At a press conference in the White House briefing room on Thursday, Mr. Trump said he was speaking to the American people in an hour of anguish and asked for a moment of silence at the top of his remarks.

He said the White House has strong opinions on what led to the collision.

Officials say flight conditions were clear as the jet coming from Wichita, Kansas, was making a routine landing at Ronald Reagan National Airport when the helicopter flew into its path.

The American Airlines jet was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members while the Army helicopter had three soldiers aboard.

At least 28 bodies have been pulled from the icy waters of the Potomac River.

This is the deadliest US air crash in nearly 24 years.
