A report from Racquel Porter

The legal team representing Constable Noel Maitland is to begin cross-examining the prosecution's first witness Thursday in the Home Circuit Court.

Mr. Maitland is on trial for the July 2022 murder of his girlfriend, Donna-Lee Donaldson.

The prosecution called Ms. Donaldson's mother, Sophia Lugg, to the stand on Tuesday.

During her testimony, Ms. Lugg recalled moments leading up to her third child's murder.

When the trial resumed minutes after 2 o'clock on Wednesday, Donna-Lee's mother told the court that it has been two years and ten months since she last saw her daughter.

Lead prosecutor Claudette Thompson asked Ms. Lugg if there was ever a time previously that she had not seen her daughter for that length of time.

The weeping mother said no.

The prosecutor questioned further: "Since you spoke to Donna-Lee on the morning of July 12, 2022, have you spoken to her?"

Ms. Lugg said that was their last conversation as she clutched the witness box, shook her head and sobbed.

Mr. Maitland, who took notes during Wednesday's proceedings, looked at Ms. Lugg and then glanced at the jury.

Prior to Wednesday's adjournment, Ms. Lugg told the court that she shared a sisterly relationship with Donna-Lee, with them calling each other 'My Love'.

Meanwhile, earlier in Wednesday's proceedings, Ms. Lugg recounted one of Mr. Maitland's visits to her house. She said she and her daughter were at home in her bedroom when they heard the cop calling.

Ms. Lugg said Donna-Lee got up from the couch and said, "Mommy, I'm not here," before running to her room. The witness told the court that she saw Mr. Maitland, who was dressed in uniform, attempting to pull the veranda grille.

Ms. Lugg said she asked him if he had a warrant.

She said he smiled and said, "Mum, annuh nut'n, man. Me a call har and she nah answer. Me know she deh here." Soon after Donna-Lee emerged. The mother said she went back inside her room.

The 24-year-old social media influencer, swimwear business owner, and customer service representative went missing on July 13, 2022 after she was last seen at Mr. Maitland's home two days earlier.

Mr. Maitland is charged with murder and preventing the lawful burial of a corpse.
