NRSC raises concern about unsafe roads in light of recent crashes

Dr. Lucien Jones

The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) says the country is faced with the problem of unsafe roads which pose a danger to motorists and pedestrians.

The pronouncement follows two separate mishaps between Wednesday night and Thursday morning along a section of Bustamante Highway in Clarendon which claimed the life of 34-year-old Stephanie Beeson and an unidentified man.

Poor lighting along the roadway is believed to have contributed to the crashes.

Dr. Lucien Jones, Vice Chair of the National Road Safety Council, said 257 people have died in crashes so far this year.

He said the matter of poor roads must be urgently addressed.

"Potholes are a problem and other issues where we're lacking road furniture and markings. And all of this means that we have to continue to focus on our roads in the same way that we place a focus on having safe speeds and safe vehicles and safe road users and an efficient post-crash system," he suggested.

Dr. Jones said the matter of poor lighting must be addressed by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), National Works Agency (NWA) and the Ministry of Local Government.

"[They] need to come together to see how we can really have better lighting on roads, especially in the country parts, because this is now proving a nuisance and a menace to people driving on those roads," he said.
