NRSC zones in on pedestrian safety amid multiple road deaths

 

With a surge in road fatalities at the start of the New Year, especially among pedestrians, the National Road Safety Council held a high level meeting Wednesday to discuss measures to curb the crisis.

 

The meeting was chaired by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Transport Carol Palmer. 

 

"...Several high ranking officials were invited from various ministries and came together to formulate a policy position on how to deal with the matter of pedestrian safety and also to allocate funding from the various agencies. And these agencies include the critical agencies of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Local Government, JSIF (Jamaica Social Investment Fund), Ministry of Education and others, including the police," said NRSC Vice Chairman Dr. Lucien Jones.    

 

He said eight pedestrians have died on the roads since the start of the year.

 

Some 900 pedestrians have been killed in crashes over the last ten years.

 

Seventeen road fatalities have been recorded since the start of this year.
