Opposition Spokesperson on Justice Senator Donna Scott Mottley

The parliamentary opposition is demanding the immediate resignation of Justice Minister Delroy Chuck following what it says is his reckless and egregious statements regarding the operation of the Integrity Commission.
Minister Chuck is facing backlash for his comments during the Integrity Commission Oversight Committee meeting on Tuesday where he declared that he has advised Members of Parliament not to divulge the salaries of their spouses to the IC during the course of its investigations.
According to Mr. Chuck, it's not the business of the commission to obtain such information.
The opposition has called for Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness to immediately demand Minister Chuck's resignation.
It said any failure to act will be seen as a tacit endorsement of lawless behaviour and an admission that the administration prioritises political survival over the rule of law.
Opposition Spokesperson on Justice Senator Donna Scott Mottley said Minister Chuck's remarks, advising parliamentarians to withhold legally required spousal financial information from the IC, amount to an open assault on Jamaica's legal and ethical foundations.
"It is really shocking to hear the Minister of Justice, this chief steward of justice in our island and a King's Counsel, encouraging parliamentarians to breach the very law which they passed in Parliament. It's unacceptable and I believe that in light of all his recent utterances it is time for him to step aside," said the opposition spokesperson.
Mr. Chuck has since said his comments regarding the salaries of the spouses of some of his colleagues, were misinterpreted.
