Opposition calls for law to create safe spaces following fatal shootings at two schools

By Nakinskie Robinson

Shadow Education Minister Damian Crawford is demanding immediate and decisive action to ensure the safety of educational institutions.

He is calling for a new law to establish safe spaces around key institutions such as schools, hospitals, and transport terminals.

This follows three violent incidents occurring at or near schools within the last 24 hours.

The opposition spokesperson says the fatal shootings at Holmwood Technical High School and Rousseau Primary School on Friday morning and the robbery in the vicinity of Stella Maris Preparatory on Thursday have placed children, educators, and school communities in grave danger.

The shadow education minister says although the children were not physically harmed, the sight of firearms and the clear threat posed by the criminals created a traumatic and harrowing experience that no child should ever endure.

Mr. Crawford expressed concern that this is the second such incident at Rousseau Primary School in just a month.

He said these horrifying incidents underscore the urgent need for enhanced security measures to safeguard educational environments and protect everyone who accesses them.

Mr. Crawford said the proposed safe spaces would mandate scheduled police patrols, ensuring a consistent and visible law enforcement presence.

The opposition member is also proposing that any crime committed within a 400-metre radius of these safe spaces be subject to significantly harsher penalties in a bid to deter criminal activity near the critical facilities.

He maintained that schools must be sanctuaries of learning and growth, not places overshadowed by fear and danger.
