PAJ condemns Peter Bunting's 'friendly media house' remarks

By Racquel Porter

The Press Association of Jamaica (PAJ) has condemned recent remarks by the People's National Party's Peter Bunting, suggesting that success is contingent upon working at a "friendly media house" aligned with the Government.

The association says such rhetoric is deeply troubling and represents a concerning trend of trying to undermine the integrity and independence of the media.

The PAJ adds that journalists play a crucial role in democracy, serving as watchdogs, holding power to account, and providing the public with accurate and unbiased information.

It says any attempt to discredit the media or sow distrust among the public is an attack on the foundations of a democratic society.

The PAJ reaffirms its commitment to defending the freedom of the press and the rights of journalists to operate without fear of intimidation or reprisal.

It also calls on all political leaders to respect the essential role of the media and to refrain from making statements aimed at eroding public trust in journalism.

The association says it stands in solidarity with media colleagues and will continue to advocate for a free, fair, and independent press in Jamaica.
