Plastic ban extended to July

The nation-wide ban on plastic lunch boxes has been delayed by one month.

The ban was to have taken effect today June 1, but it will now become effective July 1.

At that time the importation, distribution, sale, or use of any single-use plastic food container made wholly or in part of polyethylene, polypropylene, or polylactic acid will be prohibited.

However, this ban excludes related transparent plastic lids until environmentally friendly alternatives become available.

Additionally, existing stock, imported before this date, will be exempt.

According to Matthew Samuda, the minister with responsibility for the environment, the delay is to fine-tune administrative arrangements and facilitate further stakeholder engagement.

Mr Samuda, speaking Friday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said this additional one-month period will cause very little trade disruption, but will enhance market readiness for the required changes.
