PM defends use of SOEs, in response to international criticism

By Kimone Witter

Prime Minister Andrew Holness is again defending his administration's continued use of States of Emergency as a crime fighting tool following criticism from an international body.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights this week called for the Jamaican government to ensure that measures used to fight and prevent crime are implemented in accordance with international human rights standards.

In directly addressing the concern, Mr Holness agreed that everything must be done to protect the rights of all citizens and asserted that this has been reinforced to members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

The Prime Minister, speaking in Kingston on Friday, with no global convention to support Jamaica in responding to armed organised violence, the State must do what it must to stem such incidents.

A State of Emergency was declared in Clarendon last month, in response to a gun attack at Cherry Tree Lane during which 8 people were killed and 9 others wounded.

Mr Holness was speaking at the retirement function for Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey.
