Police and vendors welcome cleaning of Beckford Steet

The police and vendors have endorsed Sunday's cleaning exercise on Beckford Street in downtown, Kingston which they agree was long overdue.

The location was washed, garbage removed from drains and utility companies called in to adjust low hanging wires.

Nicey, a vendor for more than 20 years, expressed her appreciation for the initiative, adding that selling and shopping will now take place in more comfortable environs.

Inspector David Lowe, the officer in charge of the City Centre Police Station, said the congestion on Beckford Street made it difficult for the police to patrol and easier for criminals to escape. The passage of emergency vehicles was also of concern.

He said the restoration of order was a welcome development.

Heywood Street and Princess Street have also been cleaned under the initiative to clear the main thoroughfares in the market district.
