Police Commissioner Dr. Kevin Blake says ramped up police activities, targeting gangs across the country, have led to a reduction in murders, shootings and other criminal activities so far this year.

Dr. Blake says the recently launched beat-officer patrol division has been successful in deterring criminal activities in major towns and communities across the island.

"Overall, there has been an almost 12?crease in major crimes since the start of 2024. Notably, murders have decreased by 14.5% as of July 15, 2024. Shootings are down almost 2%. Robberies are done 15% for the same corresponding period. Rapes are done 32%. Break-ins 6?crease," he reported.

The commissioner added that the police have been reaping more success in the seizure of illegal firearms.

"As at June 30, 2024, we recorded a 14% increase in gun seizures over the same period last year, taking in 422 illegal firearms off the streets and our communities, and these are mainly pistols," he noted.

Dr. Blake also disclosed that the police have seized and destroyed billions of dollars in counterfeit goods.

"So pre-COVID, the JCF intellectual property unit destroyed over $3 billion worth of counterfeit goods. Post-COVID, between 2022 and 2024, JCF seized approximately $3.35 billion worth of counterfeit goods. Fourteen persons were brought before the court and convicted for breaches of the Trademark Act, which resulted in over $10 million in fines imposed by the court."

The police commissioner was speaking at a JCF press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
