A man was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with the police in Spring Park, St Elizabeth on Tuesday.
George Griffiths, otherwise called Cookie, was said to be a member of the Speculation gang operating in the area.
The police say about 5:15 a.m., they carried out a targeted operation in Cambridge district, in search of the suspect when they were greeted with gunfire.
The fire was returned and Griffiths was killed.
One Smith & Wesson gun was allegedly seized from him.
The police said the operation was part of efforts to dismantle gangs in Spring Park.
Residents blocked the Brompton to Cambridge main road in protest, shortly after the incident and accused the police of using excessive force.
