Police now promising to prosecute those who violate the law on political motorcades

The police are now warning that action will be taken against drivers and passengers who disobey the Road Traffic Act while on political motorcades.

Assistant Commissioner Gary McKenzie, who heads the Public Safety & Traffic Enforcement Branch, made that declaration on Tuesday, in the wake of two persons and another being seriously injured in mishaps on motorcades ahead of the February 26 local government election.

The latest incident occurred on Sunday when 15 year-old Lamar Grey fell from a bus in a People's National Party motorcade in Portmore, St Catherine.

Last week Sunday, 32 year-old Shovin Thompson of a Homestead address, was leaving a funeral when he joined a Jamaica Labour Party motorcade on a Toyota Hiace bus and subsequently fell to his death.

ACP McKenzie, responding on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said the police will be on the lookout for unruly participants on these motorcades, noting that "there are quite a few persons, who are part of these motorcades, who are of the view that, because they are a part of the motorcade, then the law does not apply (to them)."

Making clear to them that they are misguided in that view "has to be part of the sensitisation process," he said.
