The Jamaica Constabulary Force is warning the public about the circulation of counterfeit notes, especially with the increase in commercial activities and spending during the Christmas season.
Commanding Officer for the Newport West Police, Superintendent Rochell McGibbon Scott, says there has been a slight uptick in counterfeit notes, particularly American dollars, along the wharf.
She says the police are actively investigating a case in which a man allegedly passed off a counterfeit US$100 bill at a business establishment.
"And based on the investigation and how it is unfolding, then he would have had quite a number of notes as well, possibly passing them onto other persons within the space," she asserted.
She urged business operators to exercise due diligence by conducting the required scanning of the notes.
Persons should also not make change without a purchase.
"Don't take anything for granted. Once persons come to you with these US notes, any notes at all, even Jamaican, these $5,000 notes, ensure that you have your machine that can detect what it is authentic or not," urged senior cop.
Superintendent McGibbon Scott said when fraudulent notes are detected, persons should contact the police instead of raising an alarm.
