As New Year's Day approaches, the Jamaican Constabulary Force is reminding members of the public that gun salutes are illegal and is urging licensed firearm holders to refrain from the practice during celebrations.
The JCF says, besides being unlawful, the practice of gun salutes poses serious risks, including injury to people and damage to their properties, and may even result in death.
The police say people who engage in or facilitate this practice will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, where these incidents are observed or reported.
Citizens are encouraged to contact the 119 police emergency number or the nearest police station to report any such breach of the law.
The JCF is also reassuring the public that its officers will remain vigilant and will continue to maintain high visibility communities and business centers across the island.
