Political commentator says Jamaicans also to blame for not knowing their councillors

Political commentator Kevin O'Brien Chang

Amid complaints about low visibility from some councillors, political commentator Kevin O'Brien Chang says Jamaicans also have a responsibility to attend meetings in their divisions to get to know their local government representatives and to be informed of their plans for community development.

In the recent RJRGLEANER Communications Group commissioned Don Anderson polls, 53 per cent of those surveyed said they were unhappy with the frequency with which councillors made their presence felt in their divisions, with 39 per cent saying they hardly saw them, while 14 per cent said they never saw their representatives.

Speaking Wednesday on the Morning Agenda on Power 106, Mr. Chang noted that, too often, Jamaicans are quick to point fingers at others to deflect from their own shortcomings.

"Twenty years ago, maybe in Mandeville, the local government put on a forum to discuss the budget in the Cecil Charlton Hall, and I went there. I don't think there were 20 people. So the public loves to complain. But they are also lazy.... So the blame is on both sides," he argued.

The latest poll was conducted amongst a representative sample of 1,010 registered voters, aged 18 and older, in all 14 parishes.

Field work was conducted over the period February 2 to February 7.

The margin of error was plus or minus three per cent at the 95 per cent confidence level.
