Portland woman arrested for stealing electricity

A woman who was arrested for stealing electricity has been found guilty. A statement from the light and power company the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) says the woman who was taken into custody following the discovery of an illegal connection along the shoreline of the Old Marina in the parish, has been remanded until her sentencing on August 23.

She is one of  261 persons arrested since the start of  the year for electricity theft. Those arrested include business operators as well as occupants of  private residences across the island.
In addition to the arrests, the company has also removed more than 113,000 illegal "throw-ups". This resulted from ongoing efforts by  to aggressively tackle illegal connections to the grid.
JPS says it has been using a multi-layered strategy, which includes account investigations, audits, and strike force operations in high-loss areas.

Omar Sweeney, Director for Regional Operations (East),says electricity theft has been detected in affluent as well as inner city communities and at large and small businesses across the island. He said that one of  the challenges facing the company is that persons are finding creative and sophisticated ways to steal electricity. Illegal lines have been found buried in walls, under roads, and in the sea.
Persons are also tampering with meters and using expensive devices to divert electricity and bypass meters.
